Johnny & Julia
Johnny Wharington has been teaching Balboa regularly since 2007 with a focus on creative teaching techniques, distilling the dance to its essence, and bringing an infectious enthusiasm to his classes. He's taught numerous interstate workshops, travelled to the USA annually for Balboa, has attended The Balboa Experiment twice, and is a keen competition dancer. John has an analytical approach to the dance, loves to explore the frontiers, and is highly motivated by seeing his students’ progress.
Julia Wharington found her passion for all things swing in 2008 and has been teaching Lindy Hop, Balboa and Blues since early 2012. She saw a couple dance Balboa at her very first social dance night and has been fascinated by this intricate and elegant dance ever since. When she met John, she had found the perfect partner to take her Balboa dancing to the next level. She loves social dancing, enjoys competing, and frequently travels around Australia (and recently the USA) to work on her Swing dancing. For Julia, the most beautiful thing about teaching is that moment when the students get the hang of something that is being taught, those little moments of success that build competence.
Johnny & Julia won the 2012 Australian Balboa Championships in Brisbane, making this John's fourth win of that event and Julia's second. That year, they also placed third in the American Classic Balboa Championships (Amateur division) held at All Balboa Weekend in Cleveland.
As a happily married couple, they work together well and look forward to sharing their love for all things Balboa. You can expect to receive from their classes a solid grounding in the foundations of the dance, ways to work on social through to performance dancing, tips on self-improvement, developing styling and expression. All this, in a fun package!
