Dance on Screen:
THE CALIFORNIA ROUTINE
Films: hellzapoppin, hot chocolate
YEAR: 1941
Choreographer: Frankie Manning
dancers: Whitey’s lindy hoppers
The California Routine is lindy hop (with jazz bits, because there’s always jazz in lindy hop), and pieces of it turn up in lots of performances by Frankie and his crew(s). It’s called ‘the California Routine’ because it was choreographed in California while the group was filming Hellzapoppin.
What does it look like?
There are lots of discussions about which version of the routine is the ‘really historically accurate’ one. But it’s possible they’re all the real routine, just adapted for different films, different dancers, and different performances.
