LGBTQIA+ POLICY
We want you to feel, safe, welcome, and loved at our events. Jazz is for everyone. And we're looking forward to seeing you!
You are welcome.
We want lesbian, gay, bi, trans, enby, queer dancers of all stripes to feel welcome at 1929 Studios.
We want you to feel welcome
We want you to express who you are
We encourage kindness-first
We have your back
We love to laugh and enjoy each others’ company
We want you to dance.
What does that mean?
We don’t use gendered language in class
We make an effort to get pronouns right
Wear what you like (we recommend shoes :D )
We don’t tolerate homophobic or transphobic talk, jokes, or behaviour in class, at parties, or online
You don’t have to change partners
Dance as you’d like: lead, follow, solo
Resources
If you’re looking for other LGBTQIA+ dancers, there is the LGBTQIA+ Swing Dancers facebook group.
Other dance groups and organisations around the world are queer friendly, including:
RVA Swing in Richmond, VA (USA) has clear LGBTQIA+ policies, and the best BADGES.
The Gothenburg Queer Lindy Festival is…. extremely gay, and very welcoming.
The Swedish Jazz Band Cats and Dinosaurs is not only stuffed full of queer musicians, they play songs with radically inclusive lyrics.
If an event is organised as ELEF (Everybody Leads, Everybody Follows), it’s often queer friendly.
All events and organisations promoted as LGBTQIA+ are very welcoming to all dancers, and usually have good safety policies.
