LEVELS & CURRICULUM

  • We teach level 1 as a Fundamentals class. We’ll be covering basic 8 count, 6 count, Charleston, and solo jazz movements. This is a great place to start, or to come back to time and again.

When can you start taking Continuing classes? Talk to your teachers! They will have a chat and a dance with you about it.

We are excited to dance with you, welcome!

  • Level 2 covers this good stuff!

    Swingout

Welcome to the swingout and moves that are based on it. We build up to more complicated steps and rhythms, and you’ll be swinging out with comfort and ease. Even delight <3

    Charleston

You will learn the basic charleston, its energy, technique, and shapes. Charleston is foundational to the lindy hop, and helps you get moving to faster tempos. Let's go!

    Mixing 6 and 8 Count

We will be connecting these two rhythms so you’re flowing easily between the two. In the end, the counts will no longer matter, and your lead and follow skills will really kick in!

    Classic Steps and Combinations

These steps that every lindy hopper should know. You’ll also learn classic combinations, like "around the world with points."

When can you start taking the Challenge and Super Challenge classes? Talk to your teachers! They will have a dance and a chat with you about it.

  • Check out the Level 3 stuff we have on offer!

    Variations

Explore the fun things you can do to change up your rhythms and footwork. We'll be covering things that can be done all over the dance, in your 6 count, 8 count, and beyond!

    Charleston Plus

We are about upping your charleston game, and getting your body moving with new patterns and variations for the social dance floor.

    Connection

Let’s focus on movements like the sugar push, and the lead and follow in general. You’ll be paying attention to your timing and how that affects the partnership. We want your dancing to feel as good as it looks.

    Musicality

Take the time to hone in on the music and how it makes you feel. We will be tapping into our natural instinct and ear for when things start and finish. We'll be expanding our knowledge around music and its structure, adding to our confidence as dancers and partner dancers.

    Swingout Plus

As you can see, the swingout is a big deal. It's central to the lindy hop, and there are a lot of ways to do it. We'll be learning alternative ways to shape and style ours. Social dance floor here we come!

    California Routine

Join us as we dedicate some time to a classic routine choreographed and performed by Whitey's Lindy Hoppers. You'll learn the movements and work on upping the tempo. Faster dancing is a real high. Let's go!

When can you join the Super Challenge classes? Talk to your teachers! They are there to assist you along your journey.

  • This is a super challenging level. You should have a firm grasp of the essential rhythms and shapes of lindy hop (swing outs, circles, charleston, turns and spins, jazz steps, and so on), keep good time while dancing, and be able to work with partners of all levels. You should also be ready to attempt higher tempos, and working to increase your fitness.

We will focus on self expression, taking challenges, and working hard. You teachers will be bringing something inspiring and stimulating each week.

If you’ve been taking classes elsewhere, have been dancing for years and no longer taking classes, or just not sure whether this class is for you, talk to a teacher, or drop us a line.

Where do you go from here? Back to the beginning of course! The fundamentals class awaits, your fresh old eyes will see new things every time.

solo dance curriculum
  • We are currently only teaching tap dance occasionally. Sign up for our newsletter to find out when.

In this class we start at the beginning of rhythm tap, focussing on improvisation, accuracy, and the joy of rhythm. Thomas is in demand as a teacher internationally, and taps in bands regularly around Melbourne. His teaches calm, welcoming classes that begin and end with music.

If you’ve never danced before, this is the perfect introduction to jazz dances and tap dance.

If you are taking a level 4 or higher lindy hop class, or looking to improve your dancing beyond this, then tap is the dance for you. You will learn to be deliberate in your movements, and to refine your dancing to the essentials (rhythm!).

We welcome adult beginners of all experiences, and encourage dancers to wear tap shoes if they have them. If not, hard-soled or leather-soled shoes are essential.

  • We are currently only running tap jams occasionally. Sign up for our newsletter to find out when.

Is it a class, or is it a social dance? Is there a difference?

This is a drop-in session open to anyone and everyone (beginners too!), but centred on tap. It is run as a jam, led by one of our teachers, and focusses on relaxed, friendly ‘social tap’ or improvisation using a jam format.

Come ready to join the circle, drop a few rhythms, and enjoy the feeling of making music together.

  • We are currently teaching solo jazz occasionally. Sign up for our newsletter to find out when.

The teachers for our jazz classes are not only talented and experienced vernacular jazz dancers, they also have experience in other disciplines as professional performers and teachers, as well as as students and competitors.

In this class, we do good, solid jazz fundamentals. We watch archival footage for inspiration, we learn a dance step or two, and we play with them. We explore the way these steps work with different songs, with different choreographies, and with different feelings. This is a great place to begin your solo jazz dancing.

You will need some experience with the Solo Jazz Essentials to join this class (check with your teachers if you have questions).

In Mix It Up, we take our solo jazz skills and work with buddies to choreograph, improvise, and mix it up. Miya has taken the class structure developed by Ramona, and expanded it to explore new (old) ideas about dancing and jamming.

In this class we take time to experiment with our solo jazz steps. We stretch them and see just what they can do. We explore improvisation, we learn about choreographing, and we work with our classmates and play jazz games. It’s fun, and you will work hard.
