We have a new special treat for our newbie friends out there! The Beginner's Block in a Day aims to support our Beginner Swing Block at Smith Street Swing in several ways:
- The same rhythm of the SSS block will be taught on the last Saturday of every month, in 1929's very own STUDIO.
- Did you take a block at Smith Street Swing but want to practice heaps with the teachers present in a small class to really "get it"? Here's your chance!
- Are you a total Newbie and want to give dancing a go, but find group classes overwhelming or intimidating? This class will move quickly, but it's small, so you will get special attention from the teachers!
- Love the idea of meeting new people, but find bigger group classes harder to get a word in? The size of these classes mean that you can rotate to the same people a few times in class...make connections!
- Are you learning in private lessons but now feel ready to dance with some new people in a small setting...this is it!
- Have background dance experience that makes beginner classes seem to move too slow? Small class - lots of material - one on one attention from your teachers makes this the place to go!
- Unavailable Tuesday nights? - Think LAST SATURDAYS!
The schedule for Swing Out with Ramona and Kieran is 2pm to 5pm as per our website and Facebook. The time posted in the last 2 weeks 1929 Haps email indicated an end time of 4pm which is incorrect.
There is still space for partnered registrations or if any lead puts themselves on the waitlist, we can pair you up with a follow!
Have fun and Swing (TF) Out!

Tuesday 17 May, Smith Street Swing takes a special field trip to the very vintage Bella Union Bar!
Next week, we will get the pleasure to dance in this historic hall built in 1917. The georgouys bar and hall has hosted many a fun event in Melbourne including being the main event venue for 1929 Studios' first event, Sweet & Hot 2011, as pictured.
Classes are still on as usual, so give yourself enough to find parking and the venue as you won't want to miss a minute of this very special venue.
As it is week two, you still have a chance to jump into the beginner class if you're new too! If you're already in, bring a friend to share in the vintage fun at Bella Union.

And now announcing the band for The Shiny Stockings Ball ...
Meet Andy Swann and his Savoy Stompers!
This All-Star, one time only, world class, Savoy style line up of musicians will blow you away.... serving up Frankie's Favourites at the ball on Saturday night, this will be a social dancing opportunity you won't want to miss.
We feel very privileged to have such a quality group of musicians playing for us, thanks very much to Mr Andrew Swann.
Registration for the The Shiny Stockings Ball is officially OPEN!!
This event is a celebration of the legendary Lindy Hopper; Frankie Manning on what would have been his 99th birthday! Join us for the daytime sessions on Saturday and Sunday with world renowned jazz dance historian & dancer, Lennart Westerlund and especially for the main celebration with Andy Swann and his Savoy Stompers at the Thornbury Theatre on Saturday 25th May. Ramona Staffeld welcomes you all to her vision of celebrating Frankie the way she knew him personally. Let's Dance!
All proceeds from The Shiny Stockings Ball are going to The Frankie Manning Foundation, who run various programs spreading Lindy Hop around the world along with Frankie's legacy.
After nearly two years operating as a dance school, 1929 Studios is proud to offer it's second Community Run dance event in 2013...this time for BALBOA!!
We are simply thrilled to be in the position to offer an affordable way to come together with the other dancers in your scene to hopefully help elevate the dance. Thanks to all of you participating to help elevate the scene in heart and style ;)
WHAT: Balboa Practica - Community run organised practice sessions in March
WHO: Bal dancers of any level interested in developing the dance.
WHEN: THREE WEEKS * March 4, 18, 25 * 8:30pm - 10:00pm
WHERE: You Can Dance Studios * 130 Gladstone Street * South Melbourne
WHY: Because we love Balboa and want to enable you to bal bal bal!
HOW MUCH: $20 for 3 weeks (6.5 each) or $8 per session
8:30pm - 9:00pm 10-minute presentation, then 20 minutes Practica
9:00pm - 9:30pm 10-minute presentation, then 20 minutes Practica
9:30pm - 10:0pm 10-minute presentation, then 20 minutes Practica
ABOUT THE PRESENTATIONS:
The presentations will be food for dance, kind of like a mini TED talk ;)
Presentations can be a question posed to the group, a pet peeve in the dance, an Aha! moment that you once learned that changed the way you looked at Bal, a cool variation, slide, move, concept or a topic that we learned in another class that you want to reiterate for example.
You do not need to be a teacher or a DJ to present. If you are not comfortable DJing the 20 minute set, just let us know.
You want to practice Balboa and share knowledge about the dance with your community. You have someone you're interested in working with that you bring to the evening. You may intend to work with a small group even that shared a lead or a follower. It doesn't need to be one for one as long as you know someone you can dance with throughout the time.
We imagine that these nights will be small at first, so the price reflects pretty much exactly how much the space will be to rent. If we get good numbers we can lower the price in the future!
Contact Us to prepay and let us know you're coming!

The 1929 Crew
Check out this video recap of week 1 in this speciality series with Johnny & Julia Wharington.
Smith Street Swing now has three levels to choose from!
The Beginner Swing Block will remain in the same, suitable for all newcomers to the dance. The Intermediate class (Formerly the last class of the evening) has now moved to the middle slot and will be titled the Intermediate Swing Block . This class will mostly focus on building your dance vocabulary. And the newest addition to Smith Street Swing is the Advanced Drop-in Lindy Hop class! This class will ask more from dancers. Technique will be emphasized through complex sequences which will require a knowledge base of the moves being taught in the Intermediate class. For this reason, it is likely you will get the most out of your dancing by taking both classes until the material in the Intermediate class becomes repetitive.
Visit our new Level Definitions page on our website to assist in understanding where you belong. :)
Class Times have also slightly changed and can be found on the Smith Street Swing home page.
See you February 5th!
We're very excited to announce 2 excellent February offerings from the 1929 fold...
Mr & Mrs Wharington's Balboa Emporium: Intermediate & Advanced Balboa classes with Johnny & Julia
Get Your Dude On: A man-style solo routine with Joel & Jarrod
Plus check out our regular weekly classes @ Smith Street Swing (Tuesdays) and South Melbourne Swing (Mondays). We have added advanced lindy hop classes @ Smith Street for your geek-out-swing-out pleasure.
1929 Studios is excited to announce that this year together with Ramona Staffeld we will be hosting The Shiny Stockings Ball, a celebration of the legendary Lindy Hopper; Frankie Manning. This is an exceptional event on the world calendar that we are very proud to be involved in.
Last year The Shiny Stockings Ball featured Chazz Young and Steven Mitchell. Who will it be this year? We're not going to say just yet, but we can tell you it's a great orator and giant of our cultural heritage. You'll have to stay tuned to find out.
Proceeds from The Shiny Stockings Ball are going to The Frankie Manning Foundation, in support of running Frankie 100 in New York City... another great event you should put on your calendar for 2014.
